Localization of alpha 1-2 Fucose Glycan in the Mouse Olfactory Pathway OAK
Kondoh, Daisuke; Kamikawa, Akihiro; Sasaki, Motoki; Kitamura, Nobuo.
Glycoconjugates in the olfactory system play critical roles in neuronal formation, and alpha 1-2 fucose (alpha 1-2Fuc) glycan mediates neurite outgrowth and synaptic plasticity. Histochemical findings of a1-2Fuc glycan in the mouse olfactory system detected using Ulex europaeus agglutinin-I (UEA-I) vary. This study histochemically assessed the main olfactory and vomeronasal pathways in male and female ICR and C57BL/6J mice aged 3-4 months using UEA-I. Ulex europaeus agglutinin-I reacted with most receptor cells arranged mainly at the basal region of the olfactory epithelium. The olfactory nerve layer and glomerular layer of the main olfactory bulb were speckled with positive UEA-I staining, and positive fibers were scattered from the glomerular to the...

Polysplenia syndrome with duodenal and pancreatic dysplasia in a Holstein calf : A case report OAK
Kondoh, Daisuke; Kawano, Tomomi; Kikuchi, Tomoaki; Hatate, Kaoru; Watanabe, Kenichi; Sasaki, Motoki; Yamagishi, Norio; Inokuma, Hisashi; Kitamura, Nobuo.
Background: Laterality disorders of the abdominal organs include situs inversus totalis that mirrors the arrangements of all internal organs and heterotaxy syndrome (situs ambiguus) in which the thoracic or abdominal organs are abnormally arranged. Heterotaxy is often accompanied by multiple congenital malformations, and it generally comprises asplenia and polysplenia syndromes. To our knowledge, polysplenia syndrome has been reported in only three cattle, and computerized tomographic (CT) images of these animals were not obtained. Case presentation: A six-month-old Holstein heifer had ruminal tympani and right abdominal distension. CT imaging showed that the rumen occupied the right side of the abdominal cavity, the omasum and abomasum occupied the left...

The developmental plasticity of colocalization pattern of peptide YY and glucagon-like peptide-1 in the endocrine cells of bovine rectum OAK
Asadullah, Hamid,Pyarokhil; Ishihara, Miyuki; Sasaki, Motoki; Kitamura, Nobuo; 佐々木, 基樹; 北村, 延夫.
Peptide YY (PYY) and glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) are produced in endocrine cells that show distal distribution in each of small and large intestine. They are colocalized in the same endocrine cells at different ratios depending on the animal species. The present study examined the possibility of plasticity in the colocalization pattern in the bovine rectum, which is known to contain endocrine cells at a high concentration. Consecutive sections from different pre- and postnatal stages were stained immunohistochemically. The immunoreactive (IR) cells were divided into three groups: 1) cells IR for both PYY and GLP-1 (PYY/GLP-1-IR cells), 2) cells IR only for PYY (PYY-IR cells), and 3) cells IR only for GLP-1 (GLP-1-IR cells). The percentage of...

The mesencephalic trigeminal sensory nucleus is involved in acquisition of active exploratory behavior induced by changing from a diet of exclusively milk formula to food pellets in mice OAK

Post-weaning mice fed exclusively milk display low-frequency exploratory behavior [Ishii, T., Itou, T., and Nishimura, M. (2005) Life Sci. 78, 174-179] compared to mice fed a food pellet diet. This low-frequency exploratory behavior switched to high-frequency exploration after a switch from exclusively milk formula to a food pellet diet. Acquisition of the high-frequency exploratory behavior was irreversible. Recently, we demonstrated that the mesencephalic trigeminal nucleus (Me5) is involved in the control of feeding and exploratory behavior in mice without modulating the emotional state [Ishii, T., Furuoka, H., Itou, T., Kitamura, N., and Nishimura, M. (2005) Brain Res. 1048, 80-86]. We therefore investigated whether the Me5 is involved in acquisition...

The mesencephalic trigeminal sensory nucleus is involved in the control of feeding and exploratory behavior in mice OAK
Ishii, Toshiaki; Furuoka, Hidefumi; Ito, Takuya; Kitamura, Nobuo; Nishimura, Masakazu.
The mesencephalic trigeminal nucleus (Me5), which receives input from oral proprioceptors and projects to higher brain regions, is involved in mastication-induced modulation of satiation. To investigate how the Me5 is involved in the control of feeding and exploratory behavior, we examined the effect of bilateral electrolytic lesions of the Me5 on feeding and exploratory behavior in mice. Mouse feeding and exploratory behaviors were analyzed using a food- search-compulsion-apparatus (FSCA), which was designed to distinguish between the two behaviors under standard living conditions. To assess anxiety in mice in an unfamiliar environment, exploratory activity was analyzed in an automated hole-board apparatus. Mice with bilateral Me5 lesions had unique...

Volatile female odors activate the accessory olfactory system of male mice without physical contact OAK
Muroi, Yoshikage; Ishii, Toshiaki; Komori, Seiichi; Kitamura, Nobuo; Nishimura, Masakazu; 室井, 喜景; 石井, 利明; 北村, 延夫.
We previously reported that male mice are more attracted to volatile odors from intact female mice than from ovarlectornized female mice. In the present study, we investigated male attraction to volatile odors from soiled bedding collected from the cages of estrous or ovariectomized female mice. There was no difference in the total time spent sniffing volatile odors from estrous and ovariectomized female mice, suggesting that female mice emit volatile odors which are not excreted into bedding. To test this possibility, we investigated c-Fos expression in the mitral cell layer and granule cell layer of the accessory olfactory bulb 60 min after exposure of male mice to volatile odors without physical contact. Volatile odors from an estrous female mouse...
